Friendships

Two weeks ago, I was invited to a party given my one of my best friends from High School. It was a meeting of old friends and their wives.

This party was arranged to meet another friend from the past whom I had not seen for 35+ years. The party lasted for almost 5 hours but it felt like it was just a few minutes.

It shows that old friends from our youth can reconnect like the time has not passed at all. As I get older, I feel the need to reconnect with old friends and their families and together spend time talking about the past, the present and the future.

One thing I have learned is that you need to work at your friendships. Each person needs to connect with you one-on-one and ensure that the friendship continues. It takes the effort of a phone call, an e-mail, a visit and a continuing thread to make the relationship prosper.

I always marvel at people who make it seem so easy. Friendship like a marriage or a business partnership is a two way street. If one person is not willing to work at it, the relationship withers and dies.

I can say that the friends I have cultivated, I continue to have after all these long years and will have them forever.
