There are 3 countries I’d like to visit in the near future.
Vietnam: I grew up in the sixties/seventies & I was never called for the draft. However, I had two brothers in Vietnam and I always have identified with the Vietnam war and its aftermath. I’m currently reading Up Country by Nelson DeMille and his description of the countryside and the names of places during the war evoke a need to visit and travel the country as it exists today. The names such as Da Nang, Khe Sanh, Dien Bien Phu, China Beach, Saigon, A Shau valley, etc are places from films and my brothers talking about them. I would visit for 3 weeks, get to know the small villages, meet local people including the Montagnards and get lost in the countryside.
Peru: Machu Pichu is a site I would like to visit in my lifetime because it is the lost city of the Incas. I like to explore old ruins of lost civilizations and image what the people and the culture were like. Machu Pichu, especially, because I am a descendant of the Incas and this lost city in the Andes is the best ruin of their civilization.
Sri Lanka: I would like to revisit Kandy in Sri Lanka during its Elephant festival during the summer. I visited this country and festival during the seventies while I was young, with my parents and never forgot the excitement, the color and the rituals for this yearly festival. A visit to this country and the Kandy festival will bring back memories of my parents and great time we had together during our visit.
